The short answer? YES! Posts on the internet might seem to be temporary, frivolous blips that vanish into the void of the social networking world after a few days, but in reality, they can have a much bigger impact on your life than just garnering a few likes or comments. Insurance adjusters know this, and they have keen eyes for anything that may be construed as support for denying your claim.
Petersen, Parkinson, and Arnold knows that when Idaho insurance adjusters receive a claim, one of their primary go-tos is “Googling” your name for any information they can use against you. This includes past criminal records, anything you’ve posted on your social media pages, and any other digital traces that link back to you. Even something seemingly harmless can be a smoking gun in their eyes that they will use to deny your claim.
For example, let’s say that immediately following a car crash, you decide to reach for your phone and film a quick clip to share on your Facebook page. You want your friends and family to know you’re ok, and you definitely want to make sure there’s documentation! However, say that while recording, you add that you’re ok and free from serious injury, unaware that your still-high adrenaline has masked underlying pain (or maybe just trying to downplay the seriousness of the accident for the sake of your loved ones). Even if you do face serious complications later, insurance adjusters might use your initial statement to support denying your claim. They may argue that its proof prove that your current claims are fraudulent because you were fine immediately following the crash.
Ultimately, PPA recommends it’s good practice to ensure you’re careful about anything you do or say online, no matter how innocent it seems, and especially when dealing with insurance companies or courts. Whether it’s a public social media post, dash cam footage on YouTube, or just a comment on the local news site, if it’s on the internet it’s there for anyone to view, download, and utilize. Don’t let a few seconds spent online in the past negatively impact your future.
