An auto accident is unfortunate occurrence no matter what. But what you do after an accident can determine the lasting repercussions. Of course first and foremost, seek medical attention for any and all that may need it.
After that, there are a few steps which can help things swing in your direction:
- Call law enforcement. Even if the accident seems minor, it’s important to make sure an official report is created. These documents can be of great assistance during the claims process.
- Exchange information with any other drivers involved. Be sure to get names, contact info, drivers’ license numbers and insurance information. Gathering contact information from any witnesses at the scene is also recommended.
- Contact your insurance company as soon as possible, and provide them with the accident report, any other drivers’ insurance information, and any other documentation you have access to. A local insurance agent can help you navigate the process.
- Be careful with social posts. Anything you say online could comeback to haunt you. When in doubt, post nothing at all regarding your accident until after the case is settled.
- Deny requests for a recorded statement. Like social media posts, these could haunt you. Under the guise of letting you tell your side of the story, claims adjusters may simply be attempting to get you to admit fault before you’re able to consult an attorney.
- Don’t sign anything you’re not 100% certain of, because once you sign a settlement offer, you’ve shut the door on any further compensation. Insurance companies are notorious for presenting lowball offers, so be wary.
- Save records, bills, and documentation of expenses. Even if you think the process is running smoothly, these could come into play if there’s a dispute.
- Follow up. Sometimes the process moves slowly, and without you prompting action, things could come to a halt. A local agent is a valuable resource when it comes to ensuring technical glitches don’t gum up the works.
- Contact an attorney. If you think you’ve gotten fair treatment, this step is optional. But if insurance companies are leaving you with unpaid bill amounts, it may be time to get some legal backing.
